The Florida Department of Transportation’s Florida Turnpike-widening project is cutting its way through Winter Garden, and many residents are seeing the work done right in their own backyards as new acoustical walls are installed. This $68.8-million project consists of widening the Turnpike from four to eight lanes and six to 12 lanes from milepost 266 to milepost 269 in Orange County, as well as the construction of bridges over Beulah Road and the reconstruction of the West Colonial Drive connector bridge over the Turnpike. In addition, three bridges at Winter Garden-Vineland and Avalon roads and West Colonial Drive are being replaced. The completion date is set for August 2010. The project also includes the installation of noise-abatement walls on DOT right-of-way for qualifying property owners adjacent to the Turnpike. Photos by Chris Silveira
