WOHS names athletic Hall of Fame inductees

The West Orange High Sports Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2009 inductees. A dinner featuring the induction ceremony is set for April 18 at West Orange Country Club.

This year’s inductees are Deondri Clark, Shawn Czarnecke, Joe Henderson, Travis Hunter, Tony Kraft, Ray Matthews and the late Gary Wilburn.

Clark (Class of 1988) was a blue-chip football player for the Warriors, earning All-Metro Conference, All-District and All-State honors. Clark went on to play for Florida State University where he was a member of the 1993 national championship team.

Czarnecke (Class of 1988) is considered one of the elite slowpitch softball players in WOHS history. She was a four-year starter and earned All-Metro, All-District and All-State honors.

Henderson (Class of 1981) was considered one of West Orange’s best all-around football players. He earned All-Orange Belt Conference and All-State honors before receiving a scholarship to the University of Florida.

Hunter (Classs of 1985) starred as an All-Metro player in both football and basketball. He was awarded a scholarship to East Carolina University.

Kraft served as WOHS principal from 1979-83. He is remembered for elevating Warrior athletics from the Orange Belt to the much larger Metro Conference.

Matthews (Class of 1987) was a triple threat for West Orange, garnering All-Metro and All-District honors in football and track and earning an All-State selection in soccer. Matthews still holds the WOHS record for the longest javelin throw. He received a football scholarship at Baylor University.

Wilburn (Class of 2001) was a four-year starter and All-Metro player for the Warrior basketball team.

The WOHS Sports Hall of Fame Committee invites the public to attend the April 18 induction dinner. The cost of admission is $30. Committee member Peter Abatiello said he needs the community’s help in locating inductees Clark, Hunter and Kraft. For ticket information or to provide information on inductees, contact Abatiello at 407-905-2400, Ext. 2215.
