Winter Garden skier takes 3rd at state championship

Brandi Lund of Winter Garden starred at the Florida State Water Ski Championship, held at Ski Paradise in Mulberry, on July 12-13.

She captured third place in the jump event for the Girls 3 Division with a 100-foot jump. By jumping 100 feet, she became eligible to be a member of the Century Club, an elite organization of the American Water Ski Association for Jumpers. Lund placed fourth in the slalom with a personal-best performance of two-and-a-half buoys at 13m/55k (32 off/34mph), and placed seventh in the tricks competition.

Displaying their state championship runner-up plaque and medals are Windermere Minor all-stars (l-r): front row, Mary Hynes, Madison Hynes, Jessica Lien, Jill Chabot, Lucy Fry, Racquel Fournet, Gabby Orland; back row, Manager Dave Chabot, Nicole Pagane, Kelsey Morrison, Amanda Nikhazy, Sabrina Stutsman, Lorissa King and Coach Chris Orland. Lund also placed fourth in both jump and slalom during the preliminaries at the 2008 Correct Craft Junior US Open, held in Lake Lattawatta in New Miami, Ohio, on June 21. She placed third in jump with 96 feet, to earn her first international medal, and placed fourth in slalom with 1 at 13m/55k. Lund was set to ski at the Lake of Dreams Record Tournament this past weekend in Jerseyville, Ill.

Lund has been water skiing since she was 2-and-a-half years old and has been competing in slalom since age 9. She started jumping only a year ago and is now winning medals. She recently began tricking, and this was Lund's second tournament in tricks, which qualifies her to be a three-event water skier. Lund is a 10th-grade student at Sunset Lakes Academy in Okahumpka.
