Habitat closes on 'Home At Last' property
The "Home At Last" project to build a new home for injured Iraqi war veteran Sgt. Joshua Cope and his family moved one step closer to reality last week when West Orange Habitat for Humanity officials closed on property located at 322 E. Henschen Ave. in Oakland.
Bill Curdts, Habitat site selection chairman, handled negotiations with the owner and Mick Gasdick of the law firm Stanton and Gasdick, handled the pro bono title search, insurance and closing.
A ground-breaking ceremony is planned, and construction is scheduled to begin on or about June 23, with a four-month building time frame planned. The estimated completion date is Oct. 17.
The goal is to have the home completed and available for the Copes to spend Christmas in their new home.
