Oginni, Benzaquen named DP's Most Outstanding Athletes
Last week's annual athletic award ceremony at Dr. Phillips High saw the induction of boys basketball star Jason Rich and former boys golf head coach Bob Fedell into the DPHS Athletic Hall of Fame and the presentation of awards to 35 student-athletes. The evening culminated with four-sport athlete Latifat Oginni (cross-country, weightlifting, track, flag football) and wrestling's Jorge Benzaquen winning this year's Most Outstanding Athlete trophies.
Oginni also won the William C. Spoone Scholar-Athlete Award, along with Eddie Moffitt of the boys soccer team. The Bob Noyes Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Katie Ambrose (swimming and water polo) and Corey Boston (football, wrestling, track and field), while the 2008 Coach of the Year honor went to Lenin Vazquez (wrestling).
Principal's Awards were presented to Hannah Morrell (athletic training), Vinnie Perrotti (baseball), Makenson Joseph (basketball), Kelsey Fonnett (basketball), Evan Byron (bowling), Meaghan Reardon (bowling), Lindsey Heldt (cheerleading), Ryan Dey (cross-country), Stephanie Pancotto (cross-country), Sandale Keaton (flag football), Ricardo Miller (football), Nick Pavlovsky (golf), Rebecca Lenning (golf), Brett Maurer (lacrosse), Alexis Keirsted (lacrosse), Tim Molner (soccer), Ashley Womack (soccer), Lauren Hartman (fastpitch softball), Jamie Pindulic (slowpitch softball), Ben Tutchton (swimming), Stephanie Brandt (swimming), Michael Haddock (tennis), Rachel Conway (tennis), Robertho Petit-Frere (track), Dynasty Jones (track), Christian Hepler (volleyball), Allison Heaney (volleyball), Jake Gordon (water polo), Katie Ambrose (water polo), Jonathan Moran (wrestling), Jacob Farber (weightlifting) and Oginni (weightlifting).
More post-season accolades have been handed to DP student-athletes. Softball's Susie Stimmel was named to the All-Central Florida Second Team. This year's All-State flag football team was announced with two Panthers earning First Team honors - senior Sarah Almaguer and sophomore Chantal McCrimon. All-Central Florida flag football selections went to Latia Coker, Almaguer and Sandale Keaton. Representing DP on the All-Metro Conference team are Coker, Keaton and Cassandra Maloney. The Panthers finished the season ranked No. 7 in the state.
Senior boys volleyball star Victor Callado signed a scholarship last week to play volleyball with Warner Southern College in Lake Wales.
